International movie stars and the Japanese Prime Minister have brought glitz and glamor to the Tokyo International Film Festival. They have kicked off the week-long film fair on a "green" carpet, rather than the traditional red, on October 17.

The festival began with the screening of "Avatar," Cameron's first narrative feature since 1997's "Titanic," which received wide attention. Movie star Sigourney Weaver who played a leading role in Avatar says she is loving the film festival with its new and eco-friendly twist.

The 200-metre long green carpet was made from 23,000 plastic bottles.

Japan's new prime minister, who recently pledged to cut 25 percent in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, attended with his wife to greet the actors.

Japan's prime minister, Yukio Hatoyama, said, "I feel like a movie star!"

The 22nd Tokyo International Film Festival is screening 270 domestic and international titles, including 15 in competition selected from 81 countries and regions.
