The book aims to present all the absurdity in our daily lives using the extremely harsh situation of an earthquake, to unfold a tattered human nature with a major disaster that makes people face the naked truth.

Among the many fictions reflecting the Sichuan earthquake on May 12, 2008, Crack is unique in that it goes beyond the subject itself, said Wang Shoude, a literary critic and former art director from the PLA General Political Department.

Zhou Daxin, a well-known writer and winner of the Mao Dun Literature Award said, "The author enables us to go through the physical torment and mental interrogation with him. He wants us and the nation to become stronger and more mature (after) reviewing the disaster."

He Shaojun, another well-known critic, compared Crack to a "surgery for broken hearts on the ruins of the earthquake."

The novel follows an affair from cyber-flirting to secret trysts between two relief workers from a military hospital in the chaos of the Sichuan earthquake aftermath. Wild sexual fantasies are unleashed with fiery imagination and absorbing depiction.

Readers may be stunned by daring sexual portraits, with lines such as "the trembling earth reminds him of the throes of sex," but the author thinks them no stranger than the most ordinary parts of life.

"In order to grant social value to texts, (both) producer and consumer of literature should work together for a second creation," he believes.
