Warner Bros. Pictures' sci-fi dark comedy film "Mickey 17" took the top spot at the North American box office with an estimated three-day cume of 19.1 million U.S. dollars on its opening weekend, figures from the measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.

Based on the 2022 novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, "Mickey 17" was helmed by Bong Joon Ho, the Academy Award-winning director of "Parasite." The film stars Robert Pattinson as a regenerating expendable employee who dies on a mission to colonize an ice planet.

The film has earned an approval rating of 79 percent based on 217 reviews to date on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, and a "B" on an "A+" to "F" scale from audiences polled by the market research firm CinemaScore.

Internationally, the film took in 24.5 million dollars for a global weekend of 43.6 million dollars and a global cume to date of 53.3 million dollars.

Marvel's superhero film "Captain America: Brave New World" came in second with 8.5 million dollars on its fourth weekend. The film has grossed 176.6 million dollars in North America through Sunday for a worldwide total of 370.8 million dollars.

Focus Features' survival thriller film "Last Breath" landed in third with 4.2 million dollars on its second weekend, pushing its North American cume to 14.6 million dollars.
