The Nikkei took a beating today from the news that low-level radioactive water was poured into the sea from a quake-crippled power plant.

The benchmark 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 103.34 points, or 1.06 percent, from yesterday to 9,615.55.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 12.59 points, or 1.46 percent, to 847.16.

The dump of contaminated water into the sea fueled concerns that Japan's fishing industries may further be damaged by the crisis, souring investors' sentiment.

Nearly all sectors on the Tokyo Stock Exchange dropped, except rubber products and food sectors.

Troubled Tokyo Electric Power Co., known as TEPCO, ended at an all-time closing low of 362 yen, down by its daily allowable limit of 80 yen and falling below the previous record-low of 393 yen, logged on December 11, 1951.

On the First Section, declining issues outnumbered advancing ones 1,489 to 148, with 33 others remaining unchanged.

Trading volume on the main section rose to 2,618.50 million shares from yesterday's 2,530.01 million.
