The case of a former police officer accused of sending his daughter to college under the name of a classmate was settled in court Friday in central China's Hunan Province.

Under the settlement, the police officer, Wang Zhengrong, tendered an apology and agreed to pay the plaintiff, Luo Caixia, 45,000 yuan (6,620 U. S. dollars) in compensation. Luo withdrew the lawsuit.

In May 2009, Luo Caixia, filed the lawsuit against her classmate Wang Jiajun, Wang's parents and four others.

Wang's family used Luo's ID card number and name to apply for admission to Guizhou Normal University, intercepted the admission letter and enrolled their daughter in Luo's name in 2004.

Luo, who was enrolled at Tianjing Normal University a year later, discovered the fraud, when she applied for a bankcard in Tianjin in March 2009.

The Tianjin Xiqing District People's Court accepted the case in May 2009.

The trial was held at the Changsha Intermediate People's Court, since most of the parties live in Hunan Province.

In court, Luo demanded 141,990 yuan in compensation for violations of her rights to name and education, and for emotional damages.

All the defendants, except Wang Jiajun, who was said to be missing after the fraud was uncovered, appeared in court.

The settlement was reached following a three-hour mediation.
