The last two survivors in the hostage crisis in the Philippine capital Manila returned home Thursday evening.

The mother and son flew back to Hong Kong on a medical flight arranged by the Hong Kong government.

The boy who suffered serious head injury will undergo surgery at Tuen Mun Hospital, Acting Secretary for Food and Health Prof Gabriel Leung told reporters.

His mother Mrs. Leung was only slightly injured thanks to Mr. Leung who was shot dead protecting her but failing to save the lives of two daughters.

The boy's condition improved a little this morning. After careful scrutiny of his situation, the government and medical experts concluded it is best to bring him back to Hong Kong for treatment, said Gabriel.

Most of the survivors, victims' relatives and the remains of the eight Hong Kong tourists were brought back Wednesday evening by a government-organized chartered plane.

Two of the injured have already undergone surgeries after arrival.

An ex-policeman-turned gunman hijacked a tour bus carrying 21 Hong Kong tourists Monday morning in Manila. The incident ended with eight tourists dead and seven injured. The hostage taker was killed in police assault.

Hong Kong held a day of mourning Thursday with China's national flags and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region flags flying at half-mast at government offices.
