Cross-Straits relations are developing smoothly, with people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits desiring more cultural exchange and cooperation, Fan Liqing, spokeswoman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said Wednesday.

Fan suggested a cultural exchange agreement be signed between the two sides at an appropriate time and after negotiations.

The recent visit to Taiwan by Cai Wu, honorary chairman of the mainland's China Friendship Association of Cultural Circles, was successful, said Fan.

During his stay in Taiwan, Cai proposed an agreement on cultural exchange that was warmly received by cultural circles on both sides of the Strait, according to the spokeswoman.

Fan said that the mainland will hold ceremonies to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1911 Revolution, which brought an end to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the last feudalistic dynasty in China.

Fan welcomed some mainland and Taiwan groups' proposals to jointly hold the ceremonies, noting that it is one way to boost cross-Straits exchange.

The spokeswoman said Sun Yat-sen, leader of the 1911 Revolution, was dedicated to the revival and unity of the Chinese nation, adding that his spirit encourages Chinese compatriots on both sides of the Strait to strive for the same goals today.
