Yan Junqi, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, Monday called on Chinese youth to strive for world peace and development.

Yan, also vice President of Chinese People's Association for Peace and Disarmament, made the remarks at the Conference of Chinese Youth for Peace and Development held here to observe the International Day of Peace.

International Day of Peace has occurred on Sept. 21 every year since 2001. This year, the United Nations (UN) dedicated the day to young people.

"We appreciate the UN's decision very much and strongly support it," Yan said in her speech at the conference, adding that young people have played a vital role in striving for world peace and development.

Several young Chinese people shared their experiences in promoting peace and development in war-torn and poverty-afflicted countries at the conference that drew an audience of 600, which included a group of foreign diplomats.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon sent a special message for the conference. In it, he urged all young people to join the UN's efforts for world peace.

"Peace is precious. It must be nurtured, maintained, defended," read the message. "Share your plans and ideas. Act with creativity and passion. Help us fight for peace and prosperity for all."
