Gao Xiaosong hears the verdict in Dongcheng District No.4 People's Court.

A Chinese pop singer and judge on hit TV show China's Got Talent had his driving license revoked yesterday and was banned from driving for five years after being convicted of drunk driving.

Gao Xiaosong, famous for his campus ballad My Deskmate in the 1990s, was also fined 1,000 yuan (US$153) for having an expired driving license, Beijing Dongcheng District People's Court ruled.

Gao didn't seek an appeal, China National Radio reported.

Gao was caught driving drunk on May 9, 2011 and caused a smash involving four vehicles and left three people injured.

A subsequent blood test showed that his blood-alcohol level was almost three times the legal limit.

Gao will stand an open trial on May 17 and could face up to six months in prison if he is convicted of dangerous driving under China's new traffic law.

The amended law states that those caught driving drunk will have their driver's licenses revoked. Drunk drivers will also need to wait five years to apply for a new license.

According to the recently revised Criminal Law, drunk driving incidents may be considered criminal offenses, unless the hazardous behavior is insignificant and causes slight harm.
