China has become the world's top victim of cyber attacks as 10,593 Chinese websites were controlled by 11,851 overseas Internet Protocol addresses (IPs), a network security report revealed on March 19, 2012.

About 47,000 overseas IPs were involved in attacks against 8.9 million Chinese computers last year, according to the report released by China's primary computer security monitoring network, the National Computer Network Emergency Response Coordination Center of China (CNCERT/CC).

Japan was the source of most attacks (22.8 percent), followed closely by the United States (20.4 percent) and the Republic of Korea (7.1 percent).

Earlier this year, Chinese experts had called for enhanced Internet safety management and new legislation after?cyber attacks resulted in the?leak of more than 6 million user accounts and passwords on China's largest programmers' website, China Software Developer Network (CSDN).

China has the world's largest Internet population. The number of its Internet users reached 485 million?last June. However, a high percentage of that population had experienced cyber attacks.

In the first half of 2011, a total of 217 million Chinese Internet users, or 44.7 percent of the online population at that time, had been attacked by malware, including viruses or Trojan horses, and 121 million had the experience of having their accounts or passwords stolen.
