A spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism has urged religious doctrines to be interpreted in the right way in a talk with 50 senior monks from different Buddhist sects.

The 11th Panchen Lama Bainqen Erdini Qoigyijabu sat with the monks in Xigaze prefecture, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, on Sunday, talking about how to promote patriotism, rule of law, ethnic unity, social harmony, and environmental protection, local officials said.

The Panchen Lama told monks to interpret the Buddhist doctrines correctly, especially in meeting the demands of promoting Tibetan Buddhism and benefiting the masses.

"Buddhism is a recipe for ending secular sufferings and dispelling bad Karma for the masses. It can guide people to ditch the evil for the virtue," the spiritual leader said.

He said the monks can only fulfill their responsibilities by studying the Buddhist doctrines, acting on these doctrines, and guiding the masses.

The Panchen Lama said he hopes the monks can contribute more in promoting national and ethnic unity, social harmony and world peace.

Xigaze is home of Zhaxi Lhunbo Lamasery, the traditional residence of reincarnated Panchen Lamas.

The discussion between the Panchen Lama and monks came amid attempts by a small number of people to distort the Buddhist doctrines, in particular mixing them with calls for the "Tibet Independence", which serve as a hidden political agenda, said Gongpo Tashi, a senior official of Tibet.

The official said the rightful interpreting of the Buddhist doctrines by senior monks is a measure to "clarify matters and get to the bottom of things."
