The Chinese government is preserving 22 historical and cultural relics in the southwestern Tibet Autonomous Region.

The price tag of the project is 570 million yuan. It's the largest preservation effort in the region and will last until 2010. It includes 15 monasteries under state-level protection and seven historical sites.

The project includes preserving the Tashilunpo Lamasery in Xigaze, the second largest cultural site after the Potala Palace in Lhasa. The Jokhang, Ramogia, Sanyai and Samgya-Goutog monasteries will also be given a face lift.

The latest move comes after a 330 million yuan project to restore the Potala Palace, Sakya Monastery and Norbu Lingka Palace.
