Following are some quotes on learning from Lei Feng, a late icon of altruism, from Wang Xingdong, a political advisor and screenwriter, at the annual session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee on Sunday:

-- Government officials should take the lead in learning from Lei Feng's spirits and set good examples for the nationwide campaign, to ease public concerns that while promoting the virtue of selflessness, some officials stay greedy and selfish.

-- Lei Feng should not be deified. He is a common good-natured citizen, and learning from his virtues could start from very small and common beginnings.

-- To learn from Lei Feng, one should strictly follow the basics of the Chinese Constitution and carry out legal duties and social responsibilities.

-- The spirits of Lei Feng should be passed on to next generations with the traditional virtues of the Chinese.

A young Chinese soldier in the 1960s, Lei Feng was known for devoting almost all his spare time and money to selflessly helping the needy. He died from injuries sustained from being hit on the head by a pole while helping a fellow soldier direct a truck on Aug. 15, 1962, at an age of 22.

The Communist Party of China recently launched a nationwide campaign of "Learning from Lei Feng" to promote virtues of the nation's most famous Good Samaritan.

Wang is the screenwriter of "The Days Without Lei Feng" in the 1990s, a Chinese feature film in memory of Lei Feng's spirits.
