Chinese Enterprises Forced to Control Pollution

About 88.4 percent of China's 238, 000 industrial pollution makers met state standards by the end of June after technical renovation, according to the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) Tuesday.

According to an environmental protection decision made by the State Council, all of China's industrial pollution makers must meet the national or regional standard by the end of this year.

So far, 78.9 percent of the 17,925 enterprises causing serious pollution were tested qualified after improvement and 66 percent of 620 China's key enterprises were up to standard.

The unqualified State key enterprises are mainly in metallurgical, chemical, coal, non-ferrous metal and light industry sectors.

SEPA official cited improper industrial structure, lack of pollution control technology and money as the major difficulties that large-sized State-owned enterprises are facing in controlling pollution.

Among the 210 unqualified State key enterprises, 51.4 percent need to reform and restructure their technology. Seventy-six percent require more money to meet pollution control standards.

In the coming five months, SEPA and China's related departments will tighten their inspection of industries of pollution. Those with no hope of meeting State requirements will be forced to shut down.

Other policies will be implemented to help large and medium- sized enterprises solve their technological and money woes in controlling pollution.
