China to Establish Journalists' Day

Chinese journalists will have their own festival -- "Journalists' Day" on November 8 if a relevant proposal is approved, according to a report in the China Youth Daily newspaper.

Currently, the proposal for establishment of the festival is being considered by the Legislative Affair Office of the State Council, and will be promulgated after going through the legislative procedures.

The Journalists' Day will be a work-as-usual holiday for journalists, just like the country's Teachers' Day and Nurses' Day, when teachers and nurses have to work on their posts.

The date was chosen because on November 8, 1937 the China Young Journalists Association was founded by left-wing reporters headed by Fan Changjiang in the city of Shanghai.

The establishment of Journalists' Day will encourage all Chinese journalists to carry forward the fine traditions and do their best for the just cause, the paper said.

The All-China Journalists Association is expected to hold various activities to mark the new festival, it said.
