WFP Officials Inspects Poverty-Relief Projects

Officials from World Food Program (WFP) and the Australian Embassy in China arrived in Guizhou Province December 11, starting a four-day inspection of poverty-relief projects in the southwestern province.

The projects were funded with the aid of about $A10 million by the Australian government via the WFP in April 2000.

The projects involve rural road construction, providing drinking water for local people and livestock, building clinics in villages, and training rural doctors and nurses.

The inspection panel is scheduled to inspect the projects, discuss problems and solutions with local government, and work on the project budget and plans for next year.

According to Mo Shiren, vice governor of the province, local governments have allocated another 10.26 million yuan of funds to be used together with the foreign aid. Seven rural roads and six village clinics are now under construction.
