Blair Meets Tung Chee Hwa
Adjust font size:
British Prime Minister Tony Blair met Tuesday with Tung Chee Hwa, the chief executive of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), and discussed ways of promoting further bilateral cooperation.

Tung briefed Blair the latest developments and business opportunities in Hong Kong as well as their efforts in improving the environment in Hong Kong.

Blair said he was satisfied with the "very good" relations between Britain and HKSAR. He hoped the two sides would strengthen cooperation in various fields.

At a press conference, Tung described his meeting with Blair as "constructive." He said the "one country and two systems" principle has been successfully implemented in Hong Kong, and Hong Kong has recovered from the Asian financial crisis and continued to play an active role in international trade, commerce and finance.

Tung also welcomed international investors to come to Hong Kong to take advantage of the very significant business opportunities arising from China's impending accession to the World Trade Organization.

John Prescott, the British deputy prime minister and secretary of state for environment, transport and the regions, also met with Tung Tuesday.

Tung, who was on a two-day visit to Britain, delivered a keynote speech on Hong Kong's latest developments at the Annual Dinner of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council in London Monday.
