Nation Endeavors to Uproot Narcotic Trafficking

China will launch a three-month national campaign to take tougher action to crack down on production and trafficking of the drug “ice”, according to an official source.

The action will try to uncover and eliminate underground “ice" factories, prevent the drug from entering the market and ban the illegal use of other chemicals that could be made into drugs.

Enterprises found involved in trafficking of such drugs will be shut down, said Bai Jingfu, vice director of China National Narcotics Control Commission.

Chinese police detected over 170 cases involving the production and sale of “ice" and confiscated 7.3 tons of the drug between 1991 and 1998. In 1999, drug addicts in the country were recorded at 681,000, the commission sources said.

Trafficking of chemicals used to make drugs has increased when foreign drug producers want more raw materials. China seized over 1,100 tons of such chemicals between 1997 and last June.

Bai believed that the nationwide crackdown would help eliminate the trafficking of “ice" and other substances.
