Landslide Under Control at Three Gorges Site

A serious landslide that hit the Three Gorges site in central China's Hubei Province on December 1 has been kept under control.

Sources said that 136 residents of 53 families dwelling in the landslide area had been removed from the site safely.

The accident occurred in Zigui County, 30 kilometers away from the upper reach of the Three Gorges Dam. It resulted in huge cracks on the mountain and a slide of some 300,000 cubic meters (10,594,400 cubic feet) of mountain massif.

The landslide halted local transportation, communication and water supply. So far, transportation on the Yangtze River has not been affected.

Rescue work moves smoothly at press time.
