Smoking Ban on Juveniles

The State Tobacco Monopoly Administration drew up a regulation to put a warning plate on all the tobacco sales spots to ban smoking by elementary and middle school students, the China News Service reported Monday.

All tobacco distribution centers, wholesale spots and retail counters will have a warning plate banning cigarette sales to young people, and the tobacco industry should stick to the policy and conduct publicity work of the ban, the regulation said.

Smoking by young people has become a serious social problem, said the spokesman with the State Tobacco Monopoly Administration. Smoking is harmful to people’s health, and while the adults can make a free choice, young people should keep away from tobacco, the spokesman said.

Since 1997, the State Tobacco Monopoly Administration, together with Soong Ching Ling Foundation, the National Young Pioneers Work Committee and China Smoking and Health Association has conducted a series of public welfare activities involving elementary and middle school students nationwide to encourage young people to seek healthy ways of life and keep themselves away from bad habits.

This year they will hold some events including a diary competition, photography competition, chess match and summer camp for the elementary and middle school students, to enlighten students on choosing beneficial ways of life.
