China Willing to Join UN in Fighting Terrorism

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Zhu Bangzao said Tuesday in Beijing that China is willing to discuss any proposals to combat international terrorism with the United Nations Security Council.

Zhu told a regular press briefing that China opposes terrorist acts in whatever form and supports bringing terrorists to justice.

However, Zhu insisted that any military action in retaliation for terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, would have to be based on "concrete evidence" and have clear-cut targets, and should not hurt innocent civilians.

The spokesman also said any military action should abide by the United Nations Charter and should strengthen the role of the United Nations and the UN Security Council.

Zhu also revealed the Chinese foreign minister will kick off an official visit to the United States on September 20-21, at the invitation of the United States Secretary of State Collin Powell.
