CPC Expels High-ranking Officials

The Communist Party of China (CPC) has expelled former governor of southwest China's Yunnan Province Li Jiating and former deputy secretary of the CPC Fujian Provincial Committee Shi Zhaobin from the Party for taking bribes and other forms of illegal behavior.

The CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection investigated Li's case and found that he took bribes totaling 1.19 million yuan (US$143,300) from nine individuals, and arranged illegal gains from other people by abusing his position. It also found that Li's son took bribes totaling 20.49 million yuan (US$2.49 million).

The Commission also accused Li of having adulterous relations with a married woman, and procuring some 30 million yuan (US$3.6 million) in illegal income for her.

Another investigation conducted by the commission found that Shi, from East China's Fujian Province, took bribes worth 697,700 yuan (US$84,060) from four individuals, headed by Chen Yanxin, general manager of the Fujian Provincial Petroleum Corporation.

Shi is held responsible for rampant smuggling activities in Xiamen, especially involvement in the well-known case of Lai Changxing, and was responsible for the corruption case involving some leading party officials in Xiamen.
