CPPCC Supports Govt Stance on Taiwan Issue: Spokesman

China's top political advisory body supports Chinese leaders' speeches denouncing Taiwan authorities' decision to stop the operation of the "National Unification Council" and the application of "National Unification Guidelines", said a spokesman for the CPPCC National Committee.

After Chen Shui-bian made the announcement Monday, Chinese President Hu Jintao and CPPCC National Committee Chairman Jia Qinglin have made speeches on the incident. The Taiwan Work Office of the CPC Central Committee and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council jointly issued a statement.

"CPPCC members support these speeches and the statement," said Wu Jianmin, spokesman for the annual session of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) scheduled to open on Friday.

While meeting with visiting Swiss Defense Minister Samuel Schmid in Beijing on Tuesday afternoon, Hu Jintao said the Taiwan authorities' act is a grave provocation to the one-China policy universally observed by the international community and to the peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits.

"It's also a dangerous step on the road toward 'Taiwan Independence'," Hu said.

"It's our unswerving will and determination to oppose 'Taiwan Independence' secessionist forces and their activities and to safeguard the peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits," Hu said.

"We will continue to strive for the prospect of peaceful reunification, but never tolerate the secession of Taiwan from the motherland," Hu said. "Anyone who moves against the historical trend is doomed to failure."

Wu Jianmin said national reunification is a major concern of CPPCC members. They are expected to voice suggestions on strengthening exchanges across the Taiwan Straits during the annual session.
