China to Establish Air Traffic Police

The State Council has agreed to establish police on aeroplanes, said Liu Jianfeng, director of the General Administration of Civil Aviation of China (CAAC) in Beijing Wednesday.

The plan is among the CAAC reform blueprint submitted to the State Council, China's cabinet, for examination and approval.

During an exclusive interview with Xinhua, Liu said that around 2,000 staff will be recruited in the force, which will be dispatched by the public security bureau of the CAAC to local airlines.

The force will be under administration of both the CAAC public security bureau and local airlines, he said.

The police force in air will be mainly placed on major domestic airlines and all international airlines, the director noted.

Detailed plans are still under consideration and the exact time for the establishment is pending, he said.

Insiders in Beijing say that the approach will intensify China's efforts to fight against terrorism and provide security for passengers.
