Adjust font size:

China will adhere to reform and development so as to realize a harmonious society in the five years from 2006 to 2010, Chinese Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan said in Beijing on Sunday.

Addressing the opening ceremony of China Development Forum 2006, Zeng said it is a major task for China to realize a harmonious society that is base on scientific development in its process of modernization.

The development that China seeks, he said, is a development for the people, in the fundamental interest of the people and depends on the people.

Development should be comprehensive, including economic, political, cultural and social construction, he said.

The development of rural and urban areas, coastal and inland areas, and economic and environmental sectors should all be harmonious, he said.

It is also should be cooperative and win-win for China and other countries.

Zeng cited six measures that China will take to realize the above goals:

--Invest more in the countryside to improve its basic conditions. Surplus laborers in rural areas should move to urban areas.

--Continue to upgrade its industrial structure. The country will take equipment manufacturing as a key industry and strengthen elementary industries and build more infrastructure projects.

--Save energy, protect the environment and promote clean manufacturing.

--Promote the harmonious development between different regions.

--Improve the policy of employment and systems of social security, education, and public health.

--Further deepen reforms and expand contact on a variety of fronts with other countries.

The two-day forum, with a theme of "China: Promoting Economic Development and Social Harmony," has been held annually since 2000.
