Water-saving Program Launched in Shanghai
The government of the biggest city in China has launched a program to use water in a sustainable manner by limiting water use and other measures.

Under the program, Shanghai's per capita consumption of water will be limited to 180 liters a day by 2020.

More than half of the used water will be recycled. The government will also launch various activities to raise public awareness on the need to save water.

Shanghai is located on the mouth of the Yangtze River, but it has experienced chronic shortages of quality water because of pollution. The outdated water supply system and water equipment add to the problem.

Officials from the local water authorities said a plan was underway to replace the old water supply system, and by 2020, water-saving equipment would be required in all houses and public places.

Industrial businesses would also be required to install water-saving equipment while dealing with pollution. Meanwhile, water-saving technology such as drip irrigation will be popularized in the agriculture sector.
