Youth Visit to Promote Sino-Japanese Cultural Exchange

Sixty-five young Chinese people will leave for Japan Wednesday as part of this year's Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program to promote cultural exchange between China and Japan.

They are expected to serve as CIR (Coordinators for International Relations) in charge of international cultural and economic exchange with Japanese local governments or as ALT (Assistant Language Teachers), who teach Chinese in universities in Japan.

The JET Program was first carried out by local governments of Japan in 1987, with the purpose of recruiting foreign youngsters to work in Japan's local governments. It has so far recruited nearly 6,000 young people from 35 countries and regions, including China.

This is the 10th year China has joined the program. In 1992, China sent its first four participants to Japan, and by the end of the year 2000, the number had increased to 350.
