Water Monitoring System Built in Yunnan
Southwest China's Yunnan Province has built a province-wide water quality monitoring system in a bid to make rational use of water resources and prevent water pollution.

The system consists of 185 water quality monitoring stations which will regularly check the quality index of arsenic, mercury, lead, and phosphorus in Yunnan's major rivers and lakes.

Yunnan has six large rivers, including the Jinsha, Lancang, Honghe and Nanpan rivers. Dianchi, Fuxian, Erhai and six other big lakes are scattered in various parts of the province.

A survey in 1999 showed that the water resources in Yunnan stood at 250 billion cu m, accounting for eight percent of the total water resources in China.

However, the water resources are unevenly distributed, and the central part of the province, including Kunming, the provincial capital, is one of the cities short of water in the country.
