Lantern Wonderland Welcomes Mid-Autumn Festival

Baiyun Mountain in south China's Guangdong Province has been turned into a wonderland of lanterns on September 8 to welcome China's Mid-Autumn Festival. Locals can climb to the top to admire the spectacular view and work off some of those extra kilos gained from eating too many moon cakes.

Lanterns have been hung at most scenic spots on Baiyun Mountain. The mountain is ablaze with thousands of lanterns in all colors, sizes and shapes. Seen from a distance at night, it looks like a summer sky twinkling with shining stars.

These lanterns are inspired by Peking Opera masks. These represent the twelve animals from the Chinese zodiac. The three sheep are a symbol of auspiciousness. And this display is called joyful world.

At the top of Baiyun Mountain, a shimmering "pearl" lantern now sits in the center of the fountain.
