Watchtower-Shaped Pagoda in Licheng of Shandong Province
Standing in the pagoda forest in Shentong Temple of Liubu in Licheng is a pagoda for the abbot of Shentong Temple built in 1526 during the Ming Dynasty.

The pagoda is stone, with a stone Sumeru pedestal carved with peony, sunflower and chrysanthemum designs. The main body of the pagoda, oblong and tablet- shaped, is crowned with three levels of pent roofs. The rows of tiles and ridges of its hipped gable roof resemble those of watchtower roofs. The unique feature of the pagoda is that it has neither steeple nor any symbol of Buddhism, not even a lotus pedestal so common for tomb pagodas and Buddhist buildings. Except for the epitaph, which indicates it was the tomb pagoda of the abbot, no trace of Buddhism can be found on the pagoda.
