Introduction
Since the first appearance of pagodas in China skilful craftsmen and architects of various nationalities have continued to create new styles in different parts of the country based on traditional Chinese architecture. In fact, every era, every district and each nationality in China have made their own particular contribution to pagoda building. In addition to the eight categories of pagodas previously discussed there are other varieties, such as the nine-roofed pagoda built during the Tang Dynasty in Licheng near Jinan, the palace-style pagodas in the pagoda forest of Shentong Temple, the tube-shaped pagoda at Wanfo Temple in Liaoning's Yixian County, bell-shaped, ball-shaped and pillar-shaped pagodas, pagodas in a row on a platform, and so on, The great variety of styles and forms of pagodas is a special treasure of Chinese architecture.

Some pagodas are a combination of styles, such as a multistoreyed pagoda on an inverted-bowl structure or inverted-bowl, multi-eaved and multistoreyed styles in one structure. They further enriched pagoda construction. Outstanding examples include the White Pagoda on White Pagoda Hill in Lanzhou, the bronze pagoda at Xiantong Temple on Mount Wutai, the White Pagoda at Guanyin Temple in Tianjin's Jixian County and the North Pagoda at Yunju Temple in Beijing's Fangshan County.
