Hundreds of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) graduates from all over the world gathered in Shanghai for a three-day alumni convention, which opened last Friday.

Sponsored by the Chinese mainland branch of the HKU Alumni Association, the convention is the first ever gathering of the university's graduates from all over the world.

More than 600 graduates from around the world including Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland, Malaysia and the US attended the event.

Also attending the event were some of HKU's more illustrious alumni including Dai Liu, chairman of the Shanghai World Expo (Group) Co Ltd; Xu Lejiang, Baosteel Group Corporation president; and Wilfred Wong, chief operation officer of Shui On Land Ltd .

Lap-chee Tsui, HKU's vice chancellor, said the university was proud to see so many outstanding graduates gathered together in Shanghai.

"The real success of a university lies in its graduates and their contribution to society," Tsui said. "We expect HKU can continue to be a smart link bridging the East and West."

During the three-day convention, HKU alumni held plenary sessions to discuss strategic partnerships and sustainable development in Hong Kong and Shanghai, followed by a one-day city tour on Saturday.
