Vice chairman of CDL Central Committee in 1988-1989, president and professor of Peking University in 1988-1989; vice chairman of CDL Central Committee, member of State Council's Academy Degrees Committee, vice president of Chinese Education Association for International Exchanges, executive president of Western Returned Students' Association, and deputy leader of Mathematical Examination and Appraisal Group under National Natural Science Foundation Committee in 1989-1996; chairman of CDL Central Committee 1996-1998.
