Traveling with Children
Adjust font size:

It's not wise to bring a very small child to travel in Tibet. Usually youngsters soon become weary if they're being taken on an endless round of monastery visits. But on the other hand children can be real ice-breakers and generate a lot of interest. There are certain things you should bear in mind if you’re traveling with children:

1.         Stay in connecting rooms which are available in most upper class hotels in Lhasa, Xigaze and Tsedang. Adding a bed to a room is normally not very comfortable and most hotel rooms are not spacious enough for this.

2.         Try to stay in Lhasa or close to it as living conditions (medical, accommodation, food) in remote areas of Tibet are basic.

3.         Making contact with local people will bring fun and greatly interest children. They become bored easily just sitting on coach. If possible, short, easy walks should be taken when the coach stops.

4.         You could try to visit a school where your family might communicate with children of their own age. This could be instructive and fun. There is a blind school in Lhasa which was built by a blind German lady and this is recommended for a visit.

5.         Bring all your requirements – such as nappies and medicines – with you. Small spoons can be useful as only chopsticks are available in most places. Plenty of boiling water is available to sterilize bottles and the like.
