More than 170 theory researchers for 50 Party schools throughout the country are attending a three-day symposium to review Deng Xiaoping's theory in Shenzhen.
This is another event in a tide of commemoration activities for the nation's former leader being conducted throughout the city.
The centennial anniversary of Deng's birthday falls on Aug. 22.
One of the highlights will be a grand concert assembling 200 pianos on the second floor of the Citizens' Center on Sunday afternoon. Themed "Ictus of Times," the concert will feature local amateur piano talents as well as some piano masters such as Liu Shikun, Kong Xiangdong and Zuo Zhang. About 2,000 seats will be set aside for the audience. Some pieces familiar to Chinese audiences such as Yellow River, Story in Spring will be performed and is expected to create a sound and sight spectacular.
Of the 200 pianos, 28 will be grand pianos. The pianists, recruited from the public and aged between 5 and 82, will also include some from Hong Kong and expatriates.
The grand concert is expected to enter the Guinness World Records.
A grand party in memory of Deng was held and recorded at the city's television center Monday evening and will be broadcast on local TV channels from Aug. 21 to 23.
Other activities include symposiums, photo and painting exhibitions and free films.
Born in 1904, Deng devoted his life to the motherland and its people. Shenzhen residents have a deep love for Deng, initiator of China's reform and opening-up policy.
