Chinese-Thai Groups Back Anti-Secession Law

Chinese-Thai groups in Thailand on Thursday voiced their support for the adoption of the Anti-Secession Law by China's National People's Congress.

China's adoption of the Anti-Secession Law manifests the determination of all Chinese people to oppose secession and "Taiwan independence" and to safeguard sovereignty, Boonsong Srifuengfung, president of Thai Chinese Chamber of Commerce, told a symposium participated by about 300 representatives.

He said the adoption of the law is a heavy blow to secessionists who preaches "Taiwan independence" and that it makes Taiwan compatriots feel safer.

Visith Leelasithorn, president of the Tiochew Association of Thailand, said reunification is the common aspiration of all Chinese across the world, who are always against secession by any means.

"The law reflected the basic position and goodwill of the Chinese government to promote peaceful reunification," he said.

Suthee Meanchainun, vice-president of Thai-Chinese Friendship Association, also expressed firm support for the adoption of the law.

"It is a sacred law to contain 'Taiwan independence' and realize China's ultimate reunification," he said.

Teng Suksudprasert, chairman of the Federation of Thai University Students Studying in China, said Chinese people in Thailand attach great importance to the newly enacted law, and that it is necessary and timely for Chinese government to safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait by legal means.

Boonyong Yongcharoenrat of Thai Young Chinese Chamber of Commerce noted that overseas Chinese were expecting with enthusiasm of the promulgation of the law, which showed the wisdom of Chinese leaders.

China's National People's Congress passed the 10-article legislation by a vote of 2,896-0 with two abstentions, on Monday. It was signed into law by President Hu Jintao on the same day.
