Non-state Sector Props up Beijing Economy
The non-state sector in Beijing has made a remarkable contribution to the Chinese capital's economic prosperity over the past 22 years, Vice-Mayor Liu Zhihua said Tuesday.

At the First Conference for Non-State High-Tech Enterprises in Beijing, Liu said that more than 60 percent of the city's industrial growth came from local non-state high-tech companies.

By the end of 2001, more than 16,000 non-state technology-intensive companies had been established in the city, 70 percent of them being engaged in high technologies. Employing a total of 400,000 people, those companies had a total income of 220 billion yuan (about US$26.5 billion) last year, with export earnings topping 3.2 billion US dollars.
