Public Health Emergencies in November 2006
Adjust font size:

China's Ministry of Health today released information on public health emergencies around the country for the month of November 2006.

A total of 287 public health emergencies (excluding non-graded incidents) were reported nationwide (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan). This figure includes 18 Grade III emergencies where over five deaths or serious injuries occur and 269 Grade IV incidents (more than one death or serious injury).

A total of 8,398 cases were reported involving 41 deaths. No public health emergencies were reported in Tibet Autonomous Region.

With the number of respiratory illnesses rising as winter arrives, the ministry has ordered local health authorities to enhance inspection, analysis and reporting of H5N1 avian influenza, flu and pneumonia cases where the cause is unknown.

Such procedures are especially important in public places like schools. This would assist in the identification of any outbreaks of illness and spread of epidemics. It would also allow the authorities to take effective measures to control the situation.

The ministry also calls for increased surveillance and precautions in regard to heating systems to prevent any release of carbon monoxide poisoning.
