Top Legislator: Morocco Trip Successful

Top legislator Wu Bangguo, who is in Rabat on a three-day official goodwill visit to Morocco, said Monday that the trip has been a complete success.

Wu, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, told Moroccan Senate President Moustapha Okacha that his meetings with leaders of the northwestern African nation have reached common understanding on important issues such as the furthering of bilateral ties, the strengthening of legislative exchanges and the expansion of mutually beneficial cooperation.

Wu was the first NPC head to visit Morocco since the two nations established diplomatic relations 47 years ago.

"There are both solid basis and immense potentials for cooperation between China and Morocco," Wu said. "Enhancing cooperation in various fields will definitely bring tangible benefits to the people of the two countries and play an important role in facilitating world peace, stability and development."

He said differences in social systems and ideology have not affected the exchanges between the NPC and the Moroccan legislature.

"We are willing to continue maintaining the momentum of high-level visits, strengthen friendly exchanges and cooperation at various levels, boost understanding and expand common ground, so as to lay an even broader basis for the development of bilateral ties," Wu said.

He invited Okacha and more Moroccan parliamentarians to visit China.

Okacha accepted the invitation, saying the Moroccan Senate steadfastly supports the development of relations with China and is ready to work with the NPC to exert more efforts for Morocco-China friendship.

Earlier Monday, Wu also met with Moroccan King Mohamed VI, Prime Minister Driss Jettou, and Chamber of Representatives President Abdeloughed Radi.

Wu is scheduled to conclude his Morocco tour today. He will then travel to the UN to attend the Second World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments.
