Chinese Envoy, Arafat Discuss Mideast Peace
China calls on the Palestinians and Israel to stop all violence against innocent civilians and to create a positive atmosphere for resuming peace talks, visiting Chinese Mideast envoy Wang Shijie said in Ramallah on Wednesday.

At a meeting with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in his Ramallah compound, Wang said all the extremist activities, which cause Israeli military retaliation, are not useful for the Palestinian struggle for their rights and interests and are not conducive to garnering support from the international community.

Meanwhile, Wang stressed the Israeli side should withdraw its troops from the occupied territories and improve the worsening humanitarian situation which has caused great suffering among the Palestinians.

Arafat praised China's influence on the stalled Mideast peace process, and called on China to participate in the international diplomatic mediation led by the quartet of the United States, the European Union, Russia and the United Nations (UN).

Wang reiterated China's position on the basis of relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the land-for-peace principle.
