Glue Detectors Take Inhale in Table Tennis

As in other international tournaments, glue detectors were used in the World University Games, said Sun Qilin, chief referee of the Universiade table tennis events,on Friday.

"There are officials from the organizing committee in charge of glue detecting," said Sun, "It is international routine and we comply to it."

Glue check will be done minutes before the competition, players who receive the test will be decided randomly and a test takes 16 minutes to complete, according to Sun Qilin.

Besides glue test, referees of each match will check the racket to check whether it uses International Table Tennis Federation(ITTF) approved rubbers.

Any player caught using ITTF banned glues will be barred from the competition, the rule applied in the Universiade for the first time.

No banned practice has been found during the first stage of the competition. "I don't think there will be players banned for using illegal glues since the rule has been in force for several years," Sun said.

The noxious glue was first banned by ITTF at the World Table Tennis Championships in Gothenburg in 1993.

Researchers claim that the glues banned by the ITTF may add up the spinning capability of a racket but they are harmful to human health.
