Climate Change Minister Penny Wong said on Wednesday that Australia would make a formal target submission to the United Nations (UN) for the next round of climate talks.

Australia is keeping its hopes alive of a world pact on climate change, announcing it will stick with its promise to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 5 to 25 percent.

The UN deadline falls on Sunday, although some countries are expected not to comply.

The Copenhagen summit yielded an accord to limit global warming to two degrees.

The accord contained no targets, saying countries should put forward their climate plans by Jan. 31.

Australia had committed to the 5 to 25 percent target before, there was some expectation the target range might have been narrowed for the next stage of talks.

There has also been speculation some countries might tone down their targets after the Copenhagen summit failed to make much progress.
