China's meteorological authority said on Monday that the provinces of Shandong and Liaoning will get a break from the torrential rains that have lashed the region over the next 24 hours as the typhoon Meari heads for the Korean Peninsula.

Meari, which weakened to a tropical storm this morning, is expected to move northeastward at a speed of 40 kilometers per hour, the National Meteorological Center (NMC) forecast.

The NMC scrapped its Monday precipitation alert as a result of the storm's movement. However, strong rains are still expected to fall in parts of Guizhou and Yunnan provinces and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region over the next 24 hours.

Light to moderate rain has been forecasted for areas of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the Tibet Autonomous Region and Hunan Province, as well as parts of southwest China.
