Lake Suchitlan, which was formed because of the contruction of a hydroelectric plant in 1973, houses different species of flora and fauna in its surroundings. On every June 5, the "World Environment Day" is celebrated worldwide, which was established by the United Nations (UN) in order to create awareness and sensitize the public opinion in relation to environmental themes, according to local press. Today marks the World Environment Day, an occasion promoted by the United Nations Environment Program or UNEP to increase awareness of the environmental problems affecting people's lives.

The theme of this year's event is "Eat. Think. Save", a campaign promoting the reduction of food waste.

The UNEP estimates that roughly a-third of the food produced in the world is lost or wasted.

The problem is especially said to be acute in rich countries, where around 222 million tones of food is wasted every year.

For more on this issue, our Nathan Wakelin-King earlier spoke to the UNEP spokesperson Nick Nuttal.
