A "Green Group" composed of Costa Rica, Cape Verde, Iceland, Singapore, Slovenia and the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday in San Jose?called for action to slow the pace of global climate change during the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen.

The six countries said in a joint statement that it was extremely important to reach an effective agreement at the UN meeting to reduce global emissions and limit global warming.

Climate change would have a more severe impact on countries with few natural resources and limited adaptation capacity to challenges caused by global warming, they said.

According to the statement, climate change could cause more conflicts in the world. Conversely, it could create a greater sense of solidarity among nations if a positive agreement is reached.

"Each state is a small point of green reference inside its own region, and all these points are related between them to establish an efficient world network," the statement said.

More than 15,000 participants, including delegates from more than 190 countries, are attending the Dec. 7-18 climate talks in Copenhagen. The 12-day meeting is expected to seal a deal to slow the pace of global climate change.
