Mexican President Felipe Calderon met with Jean Charest, prime minister of the Canadian province of Quebec, to discuss various issues, including efforts to fight climate change, the president's office said in a statement on Monday.

Charest is "one of the most active local leaders committed to finding solutions to climate change," the statement said, noting that "Quebec has emphasized developing alternative energy and technology transfer."

Charest also recognized contributions by Mexicans to the Quebec workforce, saying that he is willing to take more Mexican workers, as they demonstrate strong commitment and high productivity, said the statement.

Both leaders also discussed steps to increase trade and investment between Mexico and Quebec, as well as cooperation in labor, skills certification, and educational and cultural development.

Calderon thanked Charest for the increasing scholarships for Mexican students and the growing job opportunities for Mexicans in the Canadian province of Quebec.
