A stilt, a kind of shorebirds which is known to exist in some other parts of the world, appeared on the shore of Lake Chon on Mt. Paektu on Sept. 3, the official news agency KCNA reported on Sunday.

According to the KCNA, the stilt's habitats are normally in China, Africa, Australia, the Caspian Sea, and the Mediterranean islands. The stilts are rarely seen in coastal areas of the West Sea of Korea in spring and autumn.

The bird's wing is 25cm long, its bill 7cm long and it weighs 150g, said an exploratory group in the area.

It remains unclear how the rare bird, which is usually found in relatively warm areas, has appeared on the shore of Lake Chon. It may indicate that the lake shore is becoming favorable for it to live. Dozens of other bird species including sandpiper have also been observed and confirmed.
