Tourists from all over China had flocked to the Tian'anmen Square, where the grand celebrations were held Thursday to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, since it was reopened to tourists Friday.

On Friday and Saturday, more than 1.5 million tourists daily visited the square, nearing its capacity limit, Sunday's Beijing Daily quoted a local tourism official as saying.

The 440,000-square-meter square, the largest in the world, attracted tourists with a display of 60 floats used in the National Day parade. A 12.9-meter-high parterre was also put up - the flowers were set in a pattern that reads "universal jubilation".

Its traditional charm, the national flag raising ceremony at sunrise, attracted 45,000 tourists Saturday morning.

Liang Guangyan, a tourist from Shanghai, told Xinhua Sunday that he wanted to visit Tian'anmen Square specially for the floats.

"I have been there for several times, but this is a rare chance to see the floats," he said.

Tourist spots in Beijing had received around 1.25 million visitors from 2 p.m. Friday to 2 p.m. Saturday, statistics from Beijing tourism authorities showed.
