Confirmed A/H1N1 flu cases surge to 6,457 in Canada
Adjust font size:

A total of 747 new A/H1N1 flu cases were registered in Canada in the past three days, bringing the total confirmed cases to 6,457, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) said on Monday.

Two deaths were reported, both in Quebec, bringing the death toll in that province to nine and 15 across nation, the PHAC said.

To date, 404 patients have been hospitalized among the laboratory-confirmed cases, it said.

The province of Ontario still has the most cases with the number standing at 2,665, followed by Quebec with 1,660 cases.

Health officials in Ontario confirmed one new death, which, if counted, would have brought the national total to 16, according to local reports.

The victim was a six-year-old girl from the Toronto area, the first child who died of the virus in Canada.

The girl showed the usual symptoms of a flu on June 14, and died the next day without having been admitted to hospital. She was later confirmed to have contracted the A/H1N1 flu virus.

Officials said they were unsure what role the H1N1 virus played in the Ontario girl's death and are investigating whether the child had any underlying medical conditions.
