Anti-drug belts to be created around Afghanistan
Adjust font size:

Russian, Chinese and Indian foreign ministers proposed Thursday the establishment of anti-drug security belts around Afghanistan.

"We looked into the situation around Afghanistan from where a drug threat comes largely, as well as a terrorist threat," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told a press conference after meeting with his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi and Indian counterpart Pranab Mukherjee.

"We support efforts of the international community to seek stabilization in that country and believe that in addition to efforts already made, it would be useful to take measures to create the anti-drug security belts around Afghanistan with participation of all interested parties and with the coordinating role of the United Nations," the minister said.

The top diplomats came here to discuss global and bilateral issues ranging from combating drug trafficking to climate change.

The next meeting of the three foreign ministers will be in India in 2009.
